I Love February: Valentine Printable Artwork & Birthstone Art

I absolutely LOVE Valentine's Day and the reminder to take extra time to show the people I care about how important they are to me.  I have to admit, Hallmark does make a lot of money off me, but that's ok because I am a sucker for a good greeting card : ) Another one of my favorite things is using art to decorate my house for a holiday or season.  A stylishly inexpensive way to do this is through art printables (art that you can print from home or your local photo or print store).

And that brings me to mention what I've been up to lately.  I just launched an Esty store: (DesignStylePrints) and I am so excited to share with all of you some of my creations. Since its February, I'll stick to Valentine and love themed art for this post as well as a birthstone art print for you February babes. Pssst... here is a coupon code just for my blog readers for 50% off your order this February: VDAYLOVE50

Any of these would make a great Valentine's gift when printed and framed in a nice art frame (I am a big fan of gallery frames). Note: Some of these art prints I show in large mockups when the Etsy listing is for an 8" x 10" size (so you can print from home easily), however if you would like a larger size of any of these prints, I can customize the size for you.

Last up is a Geometric Gemstone Print of a purple Amethyst, February's birthstone. This print would make a lovely gift for any woman, most especially one who has a February birthday.

Shop This Look: Eclectic Modern Living Room

I am really digging this Eclectic Modern living room I just created for our sister site designboards.net. The mid century modern chairs commonly known as the Papa Bear chair or Teddy bear chair are so comfortable you really have to sit in one and experience the feeling. I knew I wanted to create a room around this iconic classic.

This living room design features a papa bear chair in a pesto green fabric, a modern sofa swathed in a dreamy blue velvet, an industrial modern coffee table complete with coffee table books and eclectic accessories, and a media console (could also be used as a sofa table). Plush pillows in shades of blue, gray beige and cream and a blue throw adorn the sofa making it a spot that beckons guests to sink in an relax. I imagine this room set in a room with plenty of unadorned windows and lighting (and possible tall ceilings) with walls painted a very light cream and all casework painted in a crisp white color. Accessories and accents are predominately in shades of blue, cream, steel and silver with pops of natural plant greens and of course the pesto green of the papa bear chair(s).

Before I get into the details of this Eclectic Modern living room design; I'd like to invite you to check out our site designboards.net where you will find lots of free design boards and a design style quiz to help you pinpoint your personal style (also completely free and we never ask any personal contact info to give the results). If you are looking to create a beautiful room that is unique to your style and needs we also have a custom design service available.

Design Tip - How To Keep Taper Candles Straight

Your table is set for guests and at the last moment as you try to add the taper candles to your lovely new candlesticks they flop drunkenly over. No matter how many times you stubbornly set them upright they just refuse to stay. Agrr! Now instead of your tablescape looking magazine ready, it looks like the featured image for a post about Pinterest fails. If that's not quite the look you were aiming for try this design tip:
Design Tip: "To keep taper candles perfectly straight, wrap the bottoms with cling wrap prior to placing in a candlestick."-DesignStyle

To keep taper candles perfectly straight, wrap the bottoms with cling wrap prior to placing in a candlestick. Design dilemma solved and your table is now ready for its photo-op. Good thing too because your doorbell just rang with the arrival of your first guest. Better save this one to your Pinterest board so you can refer to it later (just hover over the image above).

12 Chic Storage Baskets For Grown Ups

One of my New Year's resolutions is to get more organized which isn't easy with a baby and a toddler in addition to my husband and myself. I'm always amazed at how quickly our house becomes messy when I could swear that we just picked everything up 15 minutes before. It seems I am forever picking up toys, books, magazines and clothes not to mention dishes (ugh I hate doing dishes).

A simple way to help corral the "mess" is by having attractive baskets and bins in several areas in your home. Check out these 12 chic storage basket options to help you get and stay organized. Source details on each basket are available below the graphic.

Design Tip - Minimize Clutter

Let's be real for a minute, there's a seven letter word that is just as naughty as your favorite curse word. That word is CLUTTER! Nothing makes your home or closet look messier than being overly stuffed with clutter. So here's how to strike it from your home and your vocabulary:
Design Tip - Minimize Clutter

To minimize clutter, as you add something to your home or closet, try to take something away. But what if you are already buried under a mountain of CLUTTER?  If that's the case, then declutterizing (is that a real word or did I just make it up?) might seem overwhelming. Here's how to crawl your way out: each day try to take something away, if it is something you dearly love but isn't in season then you can store it away for another time. Do this every day until you are left with a space that is pleasing to the eye and manageable.

Creating An Organized Pantry Cabinet With Tons Of Storage

Creating An Organized Pantry Cabinet With Tons of Storage

When we bought our house there was one space that was sadly lacking.... a kitchen pantry. Our original options for food storage were an awkward corner cabinet in the kitchen where you can't see 90% of the food items or an extremely shallow cabinet in the nearby laundry room. We made it work for a while, but found that when we had a disorganized pantry where it was difficult to see what we had, food waste was inevitable. I knew that I needed to come up with a pantry solution that worked for us without giving up any of the cabinet space in our kitchen.

The first option I considered was purchasing a pre-made pantry cabinet or re-purposing a large armoire into a pantry cabinet such as the below photo I found on Decoholic. Gorgeous right?

I had a space in the kitchen dinette where I could put a freestanding cabinet but I didn't love the idea of having to give up the furniture and accessories that were residing in that spot. Another consideration was that with the amount of storage I needed, the cabinet would have to be HUGE!

Ultimately I decided on demolishing the shallow upper cabinet, counter top and lower cabinet in my nearby laundry room (see image below) and building a new custom cabinet with the help of my friends at Central Valley Casework.PantryBefore

It's hard to tell in this picture, but the original top cabinet was set back in the niche and was too shallow. The bottom cabinet and drawers were a decent depth but were not wide or deep enough for the kitchen appliances I wanted to store there. The counter-top wasn't useful for storing any food long term and ended up being a place we dropped stuff and accumulated clutter.

When creating the design for our new pantry cabinet, I had to consider what I wanted to store in it and how best to maximize the space I had available. The pantry needed to hold  food and beverage items, some kitchen tools and appliances, baking dishes, vases, wine glasses and wine bottles. In addition, I didn't want to lose the ability to set prepared food on the counter-top when entertaining. Whew! That's a tall order for a cabinet to achieve! But I was up to the challenge : )

Here's how the cabinet turned out with details and tips on pantry cabinet design and organization below.

Pantry Cabinet

The new cabinet protrudes out of the niche a few inches to get the maximum amount of depth. Although this sounds awkward it actually looks just fine since the side of the cabinet is finished and there was plenty of walkway depth available in my laundry room.

Here's a peek inside the top part of the cabinet:

Pantry Top Cabinet Organization After
Pantry Top Cabinet Organization After

As you can see, the interior adjustable shelves are just deep enough to store plenty of food, but not so deep that my food items get lost back there. I suggest a shelf depth of 14" to 16" max. I added more storage on the doors so that I could pick up another 4" of storage without compromising on accessibility. To achieve this the shelves are 14" deep and set back in the cabinet to make room for the 4 1/4" door storage trays and another inch for clearance. This had the added benefit of creating a temporary ledge to set things upon when I have the cabinet open.

On the right most part of the cabinet, I designed an x style wine bottle storage (still empty in image above), tracks to hang extra wine glasses and then 2 normal adjustable shelves for our acrylic outdoor stemware and vases. On the door I now store my paper bags and fabric shopping bags.

The door storage trays are from Rev-A-Shelf, also inside the upper cabinet are:

Oggi™ 8-Piece Round Glass Canister Set with Spice Jars, Bed Bath and Beyond

I love the clear plastic bins from InterDesign and use them in cabinets all over my house. I can easily see inside them, they stack and are easy to remove for cleaning. For my pantry cabinet I use the 10 x 4 x 5 and the 10 x 8 x 5 versions.

The glass canisters are great for food staples as they look nice, keep food fresh (no more stale cereal), and you can easily see when you are running low on items.

I chose to use stick on chalkboard labels rather than printable labels because I wanted to be able to erase and relabel my canisters and bins quickly. If you do this, get chalk pencils instead of trying to use the thick sticks of chalk.

I use these Charcoal White Pencils 2/Pkg-2B from Amazon {affiliate link}

The bottom part of my pantry cabinet consists of a series of 5", 9" and 14" high by 18 1/2" deep drawers and I absolutely love how well these function for our needs. See below for images and descriptions.

Pantry Cabinet 1st Drawer Row
Pantry Cabinet 1st Drawer Row

The first row of drawers has an interior ledge on a track so we can pull out the drawers and use the top surface to set things upon. It is supported by the full drawer so its very sturdy and we can easily set even relatively heavy items on top (a slow cooker full of chili for instance). This comes in especially handy when we are entertaining and need the extra space to set prepared dishes on prior to serving.

If you roll back the work surface on the top drawer there is about 3 inches high of drawer space which we use for specialty serving utensils and grilling accessories. The right most drawer we store tea lights, sewing kits, and batteries.

Pantry Cabinet 2nd Drawer Row
Pantry Cabinet 2nd Drawer Row

The second row of drawers is great for storing our baking dishes and ramekins. It is so much easier to access them like this rather than piled on-top of each other in a cabinet.

Pantry Cabinet 3rd Drawer Row
Pantry Cabinet 3rd Drawer Row

The 3rd row of drawers stores our panini maker, waffle iron, lids and heavy vases.

Pantry Cabinet 4th Drawer Row
Pantry Cabinet 4th Drawer Row

The 4th and final row of drawers is the big boy; at 14" high and 18.5" deep I can store our huge All Clad Slow Cooker (which I LOVE) and our taller kitchen appliances. The other side is used for beverages.

So that's it on the details of our new pantry cabinet. We're really happy with how it turned out, the amount of storage AND accessibility it provides. See the before and after side by side below.

Dip Dyed Furniture

Lately dip dyed furniture is all the rage; gracing high style interiors in glossy design magazines, in the furniture line ups of my favorite brands and all over Pinterest.  A statement dip dyed piece adds a playful element to a room and is suited to spaces with an overall modern style rather than a transitional or tradition room. It's a popular DIY decor project and is a relatively easy way to add personal style to a prefab piece.

For the most part I'm loving the look of this latest furniture trend and am considering taking a crack at creating my own dip dyed something. Take a look at some of my favorite examples of this look. What do you think is dip dyed furniture drab or fab?

New Years Free Printables

It's almost New Years Eve and I am so excited to ring in the new year with my family and closest friends. This year we're spending New Year's at our friends cabin with our husbands and kids. There will be plenty of snow, fun and chaos and I can guarantee by the time we get all the kids settled down to bed we will be more than ready to pop open that bottle of champagne. One of my friends is taking care of the kids activities and so I thought I would do likewise for the adults. Normally I would make my own printables for props, tags and toppers but since last minute seems to be my mantra this holiday season I found some gorgeous New Year's printables on the internet to use this year.

Woodland Wonderland Christmas Decor

I have to forewarn you that I went completely overboard with this Woodland themed inspiration board. Our front yard is rather Woodland like, lush and green with acorns and squirrels (so many squirrels) so we figure why not go with the flow? Starting this year we're switching our outdoor Christmas lights to a Woodland theme so to coordinate with my outdoor décor I've decided to refresh my interior Christmas décor too.

One great thing about this Woodland Christmas scheme is that it is very neutral and so will work well with many different accent colors. Want to use a pop of vintage berry red? Or maybe olive green? It would look great!

So here's some inspiration to create your very own Woodland Wonderland this Holiday season...
